For our courses we use the "Manual of Microsurgery on the Laboratory Rat"

T
he "Manual of Microsurgery on the Laboratory Rat" is an up-to-date didactic manual describing experimental microsurgical techniques in great detail. We use this manual in our courses because it includes general information about the rat, i.e. anatomy, anaesthesia, sterility (asepsis) and a wide range of general techniques, such as:

Handling of the animal
Injections and other administerings
Preparation of catheters and other materials
Suture techniques
Anastomoses
Blood sampling

All essential steps taken during the operations are shown in accurate drawings thus making the manual a perfect instrument in teaching and studying microsurgery and microsurgical techniques.

Experimental techniques described are:

Permanent catheterization of the jugular vein
Portacaval anastomosis
Permanent double bile fistula
Permanent catheterization of the portal vein
Permanent catheterization of the renal vein
Permanent catheterization of the iliolumbar artery
Permanent catheterization of the thoracic duct
Perfusion of the isolated gut in vivo
Intra-uterine operations

The history and present status of Radio-Telemetry as a tool for monitoring physiological parameters in laboratory animals.

Radio-telemetry provides an alternative means of obtaining physiological measurements from awake and freely moving laboratory animals, without introducing stress artefacts. For researchers, especially in the fields of pharmacology and toxicology, the technique may provide a valuable tool for predicting the effectiveness and safety of new compounds to be used in humans.
