Basic course in telemetry in small laboratory animals - 2 days

Course data:

March 26 – 27, 2009
May 28 – 29, 2009

Short description of the course

This telemetry course will emphasize the hands-on learning of advanced implantation techniques. Attendees will implant BP and ECG transmitters in small laboratory animals. Use of the operating microscope and surgical instruments will be demonstrated and discussed. A working telemetry system and computerized collection of data will also be demonstrated. Instructors will cover small animal telemetry surgery techniques and the most recent approaches. Emphasis will be placed on learning practical skills and methods from experienced instructors. This course is given in close co-operation with Data Science International (DSI).

You can choose between the following techniques:

  • Implantation of an ECG transmitter in mice, rats or guinea pigs

  • Implantation of a BP transmitter in mice, rats or guinea pigs

  • Implantation of a combined ECG and BP transmitter in rats and guinea pigs

During this course the following theoretical lectures will be presented:

  • Past and future of the radio telemetry technique.

  • Surgical aspects: ECG and BP transmitter implantation in small laboratory animals.

  • Surgical problems which can occur
